Bodacious Bytes

How would you improve the internet?

I think the only way we can improve the internet is one website and app at a time. We are all aware of what is now aptly named enshittification because we have lived through it. Sure, it helps to point out what is wrong, but without actively creating better alternatives, we are just signalling that we know it’s bad. And as much as it helps to vent our frustration, that won’t improve the situation.

This project, Bodacious Bytes, is about putting a spotlight on really good sites and applications, like Bear Blog, Micro.blog or Hardcover (an indie Goodreads alternative). There are a bunch of them out here on the internet that are not well known and can be difficult to find.

Most people leave it at complaining about the web, but we need better alternatives. Bear Blog is a great alternative. I believe Herman wrote the first version of Bear Blog in a couple of days, or over a weekend, then left it alone until enough people showed interest. I think that’s a good approach for trying out new things that can give us a better web.

If you are interested in building, designing, or discussing new types of sites and applications then send me an email. You do not need to be a developer or designer, just interested in creating something better. If a few people are interested, I will set up a private group where we can discuss and design – maybe even code together. Contact me here

We don’t need the next huge network with hundreds of millions of people posting the same things they already post to the others.

Several bloggers have written that it’s far more valuable to only have five people reading a blog and replying by email, than hundreds of likes on social media. It’s enough to build spaces for only a handful of people.
